Castles in the air

He wanted to fly as a seagull,
free on the air, on the air free,
and the rest of them said: poor and stupid
because he doesn't know that flying is impossible.
but he spread his wings towards sky,
and bit by bit he was gaining altitude,
and the rest of them stayed on the floor
keeping their sanity.

And he built castles in the air
in the sun with clouds of cotton
in a place where no one
could never be getting rational,
and he opened fantastic windows
full of light, magic and colour
and he summoned the elf of things
who has a lot to do about love.
when the rest of people saw his great happiness then
they panicked and made rules, it might really be contagious
trying to be happy in that way.
The conclusion was clear and decisive,
he was condemned, for his crazy,
to living among people dressed as a sane man.

Ends here the story of stupid man who
wanted to fly as a seagull,....

  1. He wanted to fly LIKE* a seagull,
free on the air, on the air free,
and the rest of them said: poor** and stupid

HERE ends the story of A stupid man who
wanted to fly LIKE a seagull,....

Very well done, Roberto. You captured the poetry well.

*There's a subtle difference here between "as" and "like". To me, "to fly as a seagull" means to really be a seagull, as in "to work as a doctor".

**"poor" almost always refers to having little money, but I think you wanted a different sense here.

    ***A "floor" is always indoors.

  2. "pobre" is an interesting word for comment.
    Examples:
Pobre María, se ha roto una pierna
Pobre Juan ha perdido sus gafas
they aren't poor but it is a way to tell that I sorry for them in Spanish.
Pobre idiota, se cree el más guapo e inteligente.
he isn't poor man but I sorry that he is idiot because he get to believe the most
    awesome and smartest.
Could you tell me how is told this in English?

  3. This is tricky, and my comment may have confused matters. In fact we use "poor" in the same way, and if you had written "poor idiot", I would not have had a comment. But when it stands alone as in "poor and stupid", to me, the "poor" addresses his financial condition. I think you should continue to think of "poor" as equivalent to "pobre", including this sense.
