El acento argentino

Acabo de hablar con una argentina en verbling.com. Practica inglés porque va a viajar a EEUU en mayo para trabajar como au pair durante un año. ¡Qué aventura! En este momento no sabe exactemente a dónde irá. Tiene que entrevistarle con las familias primeramente. Cuando estabamos hablando en español, me dijo algo como "shobí..." y estaba yo completamente confundido. ¿Qué quiere decir "sho"? Creía que "sh" no es un sonido en español... Le pedí que repitiera la frase pero no me ayudó. Sólo cuando me contó la frase en inglés ("I saw") me di cuenta de que estaba diciendo "yo vi". Había escuchado que los argentinos hablan con un acento distinto, pero esta fue mi primera experiencia del fenómeno.

Práctica en el avión

En este escrito quiero poner de relieve las nuevas palabras y frases que acabo de encontrar, la primera de las cuales es "poner de relieve". Perdóname que las frases no forman una historia integrada...

Mi esposa recientemente dejó de tomar cafeina, y le dolía la cabeza durante los primeros días.

No todo lo promocionado por la cultura popular es saludable ni digno de confianza.

Ella señaló por gestos que no tenía hambre.

Hay que recordar nuesta pertenencia a la familia, a la comunidad, a la nación y al mundo.

Tu tesoro verdadero es el en que te fijas. Fíjate en lo que nunca perece.

Las puertas cerraron de repente y nos encontramos fuera del tren, separados de nuestro compañeros.

El avión está descendiendo y me molesta mucho la presión en mis oidos. Hasta ahora mis esfuerzos de aliviarlos no han logrado nada.

Milagros

Leo un libro llamado "La lagartija esmeralda", que contiene 15 cuentos antiguos de Latinoamérica. Es uno de los pocos libros bilingües en la biblioteca local, todos los cuales he leído antes, más o menos. Me gusta este porque los cuentos son cortos y el vocabulario no me cuesta demasiado, aunque hay unas palabras desconocidas en cada página. El primer cuento tiene el mismo título que el libro, y la historia es sencilla y agradable. Trata de un cura santo que vivía en Guatemala y realizó un milagro para un indígena pobre que necesitó medicina para su esposa enferma. El cura capturó una pequeña lagartija que atravesaba el suelo, la colocó junto a su corazón, y se la entrego al indígena. Pero al recibir la lagartija, vio que se había convertido en una esmeralda hermosa. La historia continúa y finalmente termina con otro milagro tan satisfactorio como el primer — la lagartija escurriéndose hacia la libertad. Al escribir este resumen me doy cuenta de que debo leer el cuento a mi familia. Es una historia que nadie puede resistir.

Little things that we as individuals can do to prevent climate change

It’s known that our blue planet has been suffering multiple climate changes during its evolution. All of these changes had their origin in natural causes and, like human beings evolution, have been taking place for millions of years. Nowadays, from the industrial revolution which began in the middle of the eighteenth century, the human attacks on the environment have been damaging the ozone layer and, as a consequence, are causing an enormous problem to the Earth, global warming.

Global warming or the greenhouse effect is having fatal consequences for the environment, like ice melting, droughts and a rising in natural disasters. I strongly believe that, apart from governments, we have a lot to do as individuals in order to prevent climate change.

Personally I think that there are daily routines that we can change to help the environment. Actions as simple as turning off the tap while we are brushing our teeth or while we are soaping ourselves in our daily shower, can prevent from wasting water. Another thing we should do is trying to share the car to commute to work. In my opinion this would have important benefits to the environment because exhaust fumes are one of the main causes of the greenhouse effect.

In order to save electricity my recommendation would be changing electric bulbs for energy-saving light bulbs, turn our central heating down and try to keep the air conditioning not below 25º in summer. Recycling is very important too and, at the supermarket, we should only buy recycled things and recycle them after being used.

In conclusion, I am positive that if we applied the measures I have mentioned above individually, our footprint would be reduced considerably. As far as I am concerned, I try to apply all of them on a daily basis and its application makes me feel happy and what’s more, I think that the Earth feels happy too.

This week I was organizing all the entries that I have posted to the now-defunct site Lenguajero and its spin-off Scribblando. I filed all the posts by date in a folder. In total, I have written over 30 posts. 

After reviewing all the posts, I have found repeated mistakes in the usage of two specific words: prepositions and articles. In fact, there is a preposition error in almost all the entries. I try as much as I can to use prepositions correctly, but it is so difficult and frustrating. However, I have an alibi, native speakers frequently use prepositions incorrectly too. So be careful with your google results when looking for advice on the correct usage of a preposition.

I appreciate Matt and Kathryn for their valuable comments in all these writings. They have been excellent English teachers.

In conclusion, even though sometimes I run out of topics, I want to continue improving my writing skills. Practice makes perfect!

Cellisca

Hemos tenido un día de cellisca ("sleet" en inglés). A las 10 por la mañana comenzó una lluvia ligera en la cual se congelaron las gotas mientras caían por el aire, porque la temperatura era unos grados bajo cero. Minísculos pelotas de hielo cubieron el suelo, los arboles, la calles y los vehículos. Siguió lloviendo durante varias horas y se acumuló sobre todas las cosas. Muchas escuelas y muchos negocios cerraron temprano debido al peligro creciente por las calles. Cuando salí de mi trabajo a las 4, mi parabrisas estaba cubierto con un centímetro de hielo, y me costó 10 minutos despejarlo para que pudiera manejar.

Desafortunadamente, el domingo voy a volar al estado de Nueva York por un viaje de negocios. Escuché que los últimos días se han visto allí temperaturas cerca de 15 grados bajo cero, y no tengo ningún abrigo apropiado para tales temperaturas. Pero me alegro decir que se pronostica menos frío para los días en que estaré en la región.

It's difficult for me to describe how I'm feeling recently. I'm living a difficult period, a period of darkness, a period in which one never thinks that is going to be involved, because you see it far away from you, thousands of miles from your head. I don't know if while reading this post, you realise what I'm referring to.

Well, the problem I have is very common to millions of people in Spain, the unemployment.

I have to confess that I'm not totally unemployed but at the moment I only work fifteen days a month so, as you imagine, my salary has been decreased.  But apart from the salary, which it's not the most important thing, are the feelings.

I'm having several feelings, the first one and most important for me, is the fact that I can do almost nothing to avoid it. I'm sure that, despite all the efforts that workers are doing, it's almost sure that my complany will close down next year. Apart from the economic crisis, my company has been continuosly hit by the mistakes that the rulers have been commiting for years and what's more, they are wrong again, and they don't know how to face the problem.

What's the way they have to face the problem?

Instead of looking for new opportunities, they let the time go away,without doing nothing. They're not prepared enough to rule a company, they're not open minded and they don't have studies, and now, when all knowledge should be ready to put on practice in order to save the company, the only thing that come up to their minds  is decreasing our salaries, the new laboral job law allows them to do that, and we can't do anything. Our rights are trampled day after day and in my opinion , things might worsen.

Well, I'll tell you about the rest of my feelings in following posts, I'd like to put things in order in my mind and in my heart first, because I'm sure that bad weather is coming and black clouds carrying lots of lightings and thunders are over my head.

La Nieve

La primera nieve ha caído y como siempre que ha causado caos.  El domingo la nieve cayó todo el día sin dejar.
Cada año las autoridades dicen "Estamos preparados" pero siempre es lo mismo, las escuelas están cerradas, los trenes se ponen atascado debido a que las líneas de ferrocarril están congeladas.  Las autoridades lograron mantener las autopistas abiertas, pero no las calles residenciales, así que mucha gente no podía usar las autopistas debido a que no podía alcanzarlas, porque la gente no podía conducir el coche desde las calles a las autopistas. Así que mucha gente no fue al trabajo.  Ayer mi hija y su marido se han ido a Nueva York, yo tenía mucho miedo de que no iban a llegar al aeropuerto, pero por suerte, a alguien que tenía un 4 x 4 alcanzó a llevarlos al aeropuerto.  Aunque muchos vuelos estuvieron cancelados, los vuelos de largo distancia se dio prioridad.  Bueno, este año lo compré algo que se quede por debajo de mis botas que previene que se deslice en la nieve, y ayer caminé por el campo para llegar al gimnasio y también tomé algunas fotos.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

En los EEUU hoy es un día de fiesta para honrar la vida y los logros de Martin Luther King, Jr. Era el líder principal del movimiento para los derechos de africanoamericanos en las décadas de los 50 y 60. Todavía es bien conocido por sus discursos emociantes y su compromiso a medios sin violencia. Fue inspirado por su fe cristiana y por el ejemplo de Mahatma Gandhi en la India.

Su discurso más famoso tuvo lugar en 1963 durante la llamada Marcha a Washington, en la cual participaron por los menos 250 miles de personas. Uno de los refranes del discurso era "Tengo un sueño", que repitió muchas veces entre sus esperanzas para sus hijos, su raza y su nación. Otro refrán era "Qué sone la libertad", que tomó de una canción patriótica. El discurso concluyó con la aclamación magnífica, "¡Libres al fin! ¡Libres al fin! ¡Demos gracias a Dios Todopoderoso, estamos libres al fin!"

Hoy en día King es un héroe para muchos en todas partes del mundo, especialmente para los que están perseguidos y los que se niegan sus derechos. Creo que es una fama bien merecida.

Si no has visto el discurso "I Have a Dream", te lo recomiendo mucho (fácil de encontrar en youtube). Me alegraría ayudarte con cualquier expresión.

Man against Nature

Never would have imagined that the fight between the man against Nature would be forever. But who will win the battle? Probably the Nature. Who is stronger : Men or Nature? Probably Nature.
The man drestoys the nature, for instance: who is the main responsible of Global Warming. The man or the Nature. Nature advices us about the future consequences, and sometimes, Nature gives natural disasters such as floods.

In the village where I live, it flows one of the most important rivers of Spain. Nowadays, due to the big rains in the north or the snow in the north the level of the river has risen. In my town, we have an old bridge ( very nice bridge) and please look two pictures ( one of them was taken yesterday the other this mornig) :

Natural disaster .... but listen to the nature ... something we have to do. Remember only a piece of advice!
