More About Mushrooms
In the United States there is a phenomenon called Indian Summer. Here, in Spain, we have a similar weather event called "veranillo de San Miguel" which happens about the first days of October. It is In these dates when in the pine woods grow the wild mushrooms "boletus" best known by "migueles" and one of its best varieties "boletus edulis", "king bolete or penny bun" in English. It is a delicacy and a highly prized good by restaurants and mushroom pickers. It is at this time when we more like going to my mother's village which is in the middle of the woods.
This year is being very prolific and you can see mushrooms everywhere.
On last Sunday morning my older brother, his wife, my children and I went to look for "níscalos", "milk cap" in English. Now it is its turn. It is also edible but it is not so prized as the "boletus" although its well-known for its exquisite taste.
Well, as my brother and sister in law, do not have children, I do not know who enjoyed more if they or my children. These latter have already gone mushrooms picking in many occasions but this time we went to a different place which is not a long way from the town. The spot is wonderful in autum.
It is usual for us "beginners" find a dozen mushrooms in one hour. But, in this occasion, the first half-hour we already had picked up about two kilos. You could find several specimens after walking a couple of steps. My children had not enough time for everything.
When they had found a mushroom they shouted excited, then they cut it and ran towards us to show it, then they ran towards the basket to put it into, and then they kept looking for. (I do not know if I have correctly written: gritaban, cortaban, corrían, seguían ¿?). We enjoyed a lot watching them enjoying.
I guess all children enjoying a lot either picking mushrooms, pine cones, blackberries, sloes, chestnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, figs, snails, or just sticks or twigs. It's amazing how much a child can enjoy with the nature.

Sounds like you had a great time!!!!! I am sure that the mushrooms you pick are so much better than the mushrooms in the supermarket which are usually grown in some kind of shed and have very little taste. I want to come and pick mushrooms in Spain !!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your corrections Kathryn. It really was a great morning.
ReplyDeleteIf you have the chance, autumn is the best season to pick mushrooms. Here in Spain it is a hobby very entrenched in large parts of the population.
If you like mushrooms or not, it is a good excuse to enjoy the nature in a pleasant and funny way.
