Yes, both of those are fine. "To pretend" used to have that "esperar" meaning in English, as evidenced by the word "pretender" (= aspirante). But these days, "to pretend" almost always means "fingir". Example: Little boys love to pretend that they are superheroes.

ReplyDeleteIn Spanish "pretender" and "esperar" are different meaning.
EXAMPLES:
Yo pretendo ser rápido= I want to be quick because it is my intention or it is my plan or ambition.
Yo espero ser rápido=I hope to be quick because I really need it.
SPEAKING ABOUT YOUR EXAMPLE:
Little boys love to pretend that they are superheroes.
(A esos chiquillos les encanta HACER/IR de superheroes)
However for actors it is said:
Actors love to play that they are superheroes. isn't it?
Yes, we would say:

But we don't speak of actors "pretending", even though that is exactly what they are doing.
