Olympic Games Diary I

Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen has been the greatest attraction of the Olympic Games so far. She has won gold medals in the 200 meters individual medley with Olympic record and the 400 meters individual medley with an outstanding world record. Her performance seems normal for an Olympic gold medalist, but it is spectacular considering she is only sixteen. And more surprising is that she swan the last 50 meters of the 400 meters race faster than her male counterpart in the same event. Awesome!

Obviously, her records have raised a few eyebrows among swimming coaches and competitors. The Chinese authorities have backed up her swimmer, and the person-in-charge of the Olympic Games anti-doping program has defended the drug detention procedures. In brief, we will have to wait for the final results of the doping tests. I hope she is clean.

Ingeniería, abogacía y otras hierbas

Tengo un amigo desde los años universitarios. Éramos compañeros de habitación durante mi último año en la universidad. Estudió ingeniería como yo, pero su carrera era ingeniería eléctrica. Trabajó por varios años, y al mismo tiempo recibió un doctorado en ingeniería. Viente años después, escuché que había vuelto a la universidad para estudiar abogacía. ¿Abogacía? ¿Estaría loco? Al parecer, se había involucrado con un montón de trabajo con las patentes, había encontrado el tema interesante, y decidió cambiar de profesión. Ahora es un abogado de patentes, con muchos años de experiencia en ingeniería, una posición valiosa de tener. ¿Quién sabe? Talvez algun día volverá otra vez a la universidad para estudiar [] medicina.

Introducing Myself

Hi everybody! I’m happy to be here writing on the blog.  First of all, I want to thank Matt for having invited me to join this project, I think it is an excellent tool to improve our writing skills in the language we are learning. Now, let me tell you a little bit about me.

My name is Mauricio Olvera, I'm from Mexico City and I turned 20 last June. I’m studying Telecommunications Engineering at UNAM, where I will start the fifth semester next Monday. I like reading and writing. I remember when I was in high school I used to devote most of mi time writing short fiction stories, but now things have changed a lot because I scarcely have time to do that. I also like playing soccer, sport in which I play as goalkeeper. On the other hand, I don’t know how to cook and dance, but I would like to learn in a near future.

 Well, that’s all for now. It was just a bit introduction about me. Thanks for reading me and helping me correct these little paragraphs. Good night.

Writer's Block

I want to write about everything, but I can't write about anything. So many interesting topics come to my mind: the Olympic Games, a continuing education course, the 2012 US presidential election, a beach day, my new exercise routing, a cooking recipe... Unfortunately, no sentences are flowing out of my mind. I have the topics, the ideas, and the pen ready in my hand, but the blank page is still there without a single sentence.

Well, I have finished a boring paragraph about nothing, just free writing. Some days my mind is not in the right mood for writing. I will save the above-mentioned topics for another day.

Hello everyone, This is Juampy here.
Many people think that learning to write a new language is very difficult. Surely, they are right but today I refuse to give up. I know that this is pretty tough, but I do not care how long it takes me. Although I have to learn from my mistakes, I want to try it anyway!!!. So, keep calm and carry on!!!.

Compartiendo

Hoy he hablado con dos mexicanos por medio de verbling.com. Ambos eran buenos conversadores, y me gusté mucho la experiencia. El primero era un estudiante de la ingeniería de telecomunicaciones, y había construido un sitio web para ayudar a los que aprenden español. Quiero examinar el sitio web más tarde. El segundo era un abogado del sur del país. Me enseñó la palabra “abogacía”, sin tratar. La usé, y aunque nunca la había yo escuchado ni leido, pude comprenderla por el contexto. Es un placer hablar con gente de otras partes del mundo, no sólo para practicar los idiomas, sino también compartir nuestras vidas de una manera pequeña pero real.

A twist of nut

It is a literal traduction of one common expression, at least in Spain: "un giro de tuerca".
And that's what I am  trying to do when I am going to talk about the plight I am going through.
I am going to try see the things in a positive way. No through rose-colored glasses as Matt did mention aptly,  but yes with some of optimism.
I can not complain at this time. I have a job, which today for today it is something complicated enough in Spain. I have a salary and therefore, money to pay the mortgage, money to pay the household expenses, money to pay the food and money to pay the education of my children.
When I think of this way the work is less hard, up early or working at night does not cost much. It is only a question of seeing the life. It is question of seeing the things from the positive side.
I do not know how long this situation will last, but I must give thanks to God for having what now I have.
There is another expression in Spain: "A mal tiempo, buena cara". Literally "With bad weather, good face", which in English I think it is something like: "A cloud has a silver face".

Fatigue

Besides phisical effort, is the dream changed. Working in shifts is exhausting. Takes some getting used. To make matters worse, lately, I am the backup "reinforce". In a very, very colloquial Spanish we could say "machaca". (isn't in the dictionary). As I am the rookie and many people is having their Summer hollidays, I am working at nights, which is the more complicate shift since it has only a person in charge . I have been working a fornight at night and I have ahead, another four weeks, the whole August.
In short, it's a reality hit. Not everything is pink colour. Life is also brown and sometimes gloomy.

Fire Drill

Esta mañana tuvimos un "fire drill" (simulacro de incendio), una práctica de evacuar el edificio en caso de incendio. Nos informaron del evento hace unos días, así que nadie se sorprendió. Recuerdo que, cuando mi hijo mayor estaba en su primer año escolar, le molestó mucho el primer simulacro de incendio. Creo que el volumen de la sirena era su principal queja.

Describing a game

First, mark an area of about 8 by 3 meters as the "bowling alley". Use 10 plastic bottles as the "bowling pins", don't forget fill the bottles with a little of water to make them heavier. Line up the bottles in rows of 4, 3, 2, and 1, just like a 10 pin bowling.
Then, give a frissbee to each player and allow them take 2 shots every time. Give the players a total of 10 turns to each one. You will score one point for each pin that knock down. If you score a "strike", knocking all the bottles down, then all the points will be added together and the player takes two more shots.
Finally, Win the game the player with the most of the points. Be carefull, don't play this game in a very windy day.

Lo que pasó el fin de semana

Fue un fin de semana bastante ocupado. Fuimos a la piscina dos veces, y las temperaturas del aire y del agua eran ideales. Realicé algún trabajo en el jardín, podando arbustos y cortando el césped. Mientras tanto, mi esposa limpió la casa e identificó objetos que podíamos desechar. También mis hijos y yo terminamos un libro que leíamos juntos desde hace un par de semanas.

BIROME

Today, I wanted to share a short story that I told to a skype friend yesterday...

In my country the BIC ballpoint Pen is known as BIROME, its name came from the society between two business men, Mr. BIRO and Mr. Méyne, one of these man was hungarian and the other one I think was Argentinean, but the hungarian man was the true inventor of the ballpoint pen. Many people say He was argentinean, but they are wrong, he only got the argentinean citizenship and was living in my country during his invention. So, as you probably see, the name is the juntion between the two surnames, BIRO+MEyne=BIROME, hehe.

Job Interview

I had a job interview yesterday. As usual, I could not sleep the day before. Anyway, I woke up early and dressed for success: navy suit, blue shirt, red tie, and shined shoes.

The interviewer was a hot... young professional lady. In the middle of the interview, she asked me about my English skills. I told her that I am not fully bilingual, and then I started to speak in English. I explained to her that in my current job, I communicate with vendors from the United States and write emails in English. She said that I have good English skills. hahaha!

I passed the job interview but not with flying colors. Tomorrow I am going to dedicate the entire day to my job search. I hope to find a good job in August.

The camp

The last Tuesday my eldest son who is nine years old went to a camp in the mountains. They are going to stand there eight days. I don´t know if he was very conscious that he was going to spend seven night out of his house. I'm a bit worried for this reason. He has already been one or two night out of house without his family, but, this time, I think it's a lot of time. He is a child very dinamic and active. He enjoy a lot in the nature. I know he will have a great time, but, also I know he will feel the absence of his parents and especially of his little brother. I hope he does not have the opportunity to remind from us a lot. That would mean he only has time to enjoy.

Crazy times

I suppose it's the force of the influence of TV, cinema, the internet, the social networks, etc. There have always been crazy murderers. But, their motivations or their mental disorders, I think were different.
The terrible recent event in Denver suggests to me that in the "virtual world", the silliness and irrationality is exceeding its limits, which is confusing the young. Is the world, already, very disoriented?. Unfortunately, I think we are in the wrong way.

Honduras

Conocía este nombre desde hace muchos años pero nunca me habia detenido a pensar en lo que quería decir. Describing prospects

Well, let me see. I love solving problems and I do like so much dealing with new activities every day. I would really like to look into the posibility to work in a huge multinational company. Well, I am very efficient, so I think I would like to deal with the tight schedules of companies, organizing procedures and making sure that the machines and security devices are in order. My boss says I am confident and stay calm under pressure so, if there were any unexpected problem I will be able to solve it. I think I am not good enough with people, even though I can adapt to change easily and have no problem working with others or in a team. Besides, all of my friends say that I am very hard-working so I would look forward to a challenging position. On top of that, I am very imaginative I would be keen to demostrate how well I could look after the problems in many diferent ways.

A paso de tortuga

Encontré la frase "A paso de tortuga" en el periódico esta mañana. Obviamente equivale a "At a turtle's pace" en inglés. Antes de esto, no había conectado la palabra "pace" a "to pass". "Pace" no es una palabra común, no desconocida, pero no usada frecuentemente. Quiere decir "velocidad" pero se usa solo en circunstancias particulares -- usualmente trata de movimientos bastante lentos. Decimos también "At a snail's pace", pero "At a rabbit's pace" me parece raro. "Pace" es también un verbo que describe como camina una persona preocupada o nerviosa, de un lado a otro de la habitación.

A potencial career plan

First, I am willing to work without payment for a while in order to get experience.
Next, I would like to get a job in which I can feel self-realizated. A very challenger job with a lot of interesting activities.
Another thing I am willing to do is to be relocated for a special work of my job, a bit like a job abroad, that would be great to improve my skills in English.
The fourth stage of my plan is to reach the top of my work, I mean, getting as promotions as I can, and one day be the CIO of my company or something like that.(yeah, you wish! haha)

El reembolso

Por fin la compañía celular me ha concedido un reembolso, el que había llevado tres semanas pidiendo. Es una larga historia, pero, de manera breve, hace tres semanas aumenté el número de minutos de mi plan, y querían cobrarme 135 dólares por el cambio. Los Juegos Olimpicos

La semana pasada ha habido mucha controversia sobre la seguridad del juegos olimpicos.  Hace mucho tiempo el gobierno dio un contrato a un empresa de seguridad para organizar la seguridad de los juegos olimpicos.  La semana pasado la compaña le dijo el gobierno que no tiene suficiente empleados capacitados para garantizar la seguridad de este evento.  Cuando la compaña ganó el contrato, se anunció que se necesitaba empleados desde  todas partes del país, pero las personas que se incorporaron a la empresa apenas llegaron a  trabajar y pocos de ellos han sido entrenados totalmente para el trabajo.  Vaya qué esta ocurriendo en este país cuando hay tantos desempleados y sólo pocos quieren trabajar!!!!!  Ahora ha sido anunciado en las noticas que el éjercito tendrá que hacer el trabajo de seguridad.  Con el gobierno recortes al éjercito va a ser un empujó a los limites.

Ayer recogí un periódico hispano en una tienda por aquí. El principal título hablaba del calor que teníamos las dos semanas pasadas. Había también un artículo que trataba de una decisión reciente de la Corte Suprema sobre la reforma del sistema de salud en este país. Sin embargo, el contenido dominante del periódico eran noticias de abogados que estaban muy preocupados por los lesionados por accidentes de transporte y trabajo. Prometían luchar por los derechos de las víctimas, y puedes estar seguro, ganar mucho dinero, incluso un poco para el lesionado. Además, por supuesto, las noticias enfatizaban que todos hablaban español.

Supermarkets are like my second home. In my family, I am the person-in-charge of buying food and household products, so I go to the supermarkets in my area several times per week. My city has many options, including a Walmart.

The prices of food and household products have increased steadily in recent years. I am on a tight budget, so I plan carefully each supermarket visit. I scrutinize all shoppers searching for the best deals. If you do not organize your visits to the supermarket, you will spend a lot of money on unnecessary products.

Usually, my city's supermarkets are clean and have a good inventory. However, I hate finding discrepancies between the label and cash register prices. This problem happens frequently and bothers me. In addition, I dislike the poor quality of some vegetables, the long lines to pay, and the lack of advertised discount products.

After zillions of visits to supermarkets, I have become a “supermarket expert.” In general, my city's supermarkets give good service to the costumers, but there is always space for improvement.

Hot Summer

This summer has been one of the hottest in my country. I live on a Caribbean island with hot climate throughout the year, but this summer is breaking all-time records. Similarly, this heat wave is affecting not only my island but also many places around the globe. For example, in the United States about sixty people have died as a consequence of this heat wave.

How am I dealing with this heat wave? First, I start off each day with a colorful, refreshing fruit salad. Forget about hot chocolate or coffee, pancakes, bagels, or scrambled eggs. Instead, I eat a full plate of diced mangoes, cantaloupes, bananas, kiwis, peaches, and so on. Second, I drink more than eight glasses of water during the day to keep my body hydrated. When I am driving around my city, I feel rivers of sweat flowing through my back. Finally, I bought a small pool to relax during the afternoon.

Supongo que alguien ha hecho una crítica general, como "Estoy harto de ver estos platos sucios en todas las partes de la cocina.", y que otra persona le ha preguntado "¿Te refieres a mí?". Una respuesta común sería "If the shoes fits, wear it!" Si te cabe el zapato, llévalo. En otras palabras, si te cabe la crítica, acéptala. Obviamente, debes tener cuidado en usar esta expresión, a menos que te guste lavar todos los platos a tu mismo.

La respiración

Breathe. Aquí tenemos una palabra inglesa, buena y fuerte, que no tiene ninguna raíz en el latín -- una buena palabra de la que hablar en un escrito.

"Breathe" es el verbo (respirar), pronunciado con lo que llamamos el sonido "long E", como el sonido de "see". El par de letras "th" es sonoro como el de "mother", no como el de "bath". La última "e" es muda, dando a la palabra una sola sílaba. Creo que es bastante inusual tener una palabra monosilábica que termina con el "th" sonoro. Pero hay otros ejemplos, como "lathe", "seethe" y "writhe".

A propósito, el sustantivo es "breath" (aliento). Su sonido central es el "short E", el de "best" y "when". El "th" no es sonoro, así que "breath" y "meth" se riman.

¡Basta ya con el estudio! ¿Voy a escribir otra vez sobre la respiración? -- Don't hold your breath! (Puedes buscar esa expresión!)

Animales en Inglaterra

Esta mañana estaba hablando con un amigo español sobre el festival de San Fermín y la verdad es que a mí no me gusta la crueldad a los animales, así que cambiamos el tema de los animales salvajes en Gran Bretaña.  Porque en este momento él vive aquí con su familia en Gran Bretaña para mejorar su inglés.  Bueno pensé que le enseñaría sobre los animales aquí.  En todas partes de Gran Bretaña hay zorros incluso en las ciudades, que los llamamos los zorros urbanos.  Hace algunos años la gente de clase alta incluyendo la familia real, solían cazar los zorros.   Los amantes de animales compaña contra esta tradición y después de mucho tiempo lograron a cambiar la ley. Ahora no se permite cazar los zorros, de eso estoy my feliz.  También tenemos aquí  ardillas grises que llegaron desde estadounidense y nuestras ardillas de colores rojas se han convertido casi en extinción porque las grises son más grandes y también agresivas.  Sólo hay ciertas zonas donde las rojas viven y están protegidos contra las grises.  Cuando estuve en Alemania hace muchos años vi ardillas de diferentes colores como rojas, negras y creo que marrón, este país no ha sufrido de la invasión de los grises jejje

Wimbledon Tenis

El torneo de tenis en Wimbledon acabó esta tarde.  La gente de Inglaterra tenía mucha esperanza por nuestro jugador inglés que batalló para aparecer en la final.  Murray es el primer hombre alcanzar la final de Wimbledon desde hace sesenta años.  Bueno, ha perdido el partido y tenemos que esperar otro año nuevamente.  También, hoy en Inglaterra fue el Gran Prix, realmente ha sido un día de deporte con ninguno campeón de Inglaterra jejjje

Europeanism

It's true, perhaps I was very drastic. I was too tired. It's hard to get used to the frantic and hard work of a factory as a laborer after having spent so many years sitting in the office of another factory.
The match was great. It was a rare confrontation. I enjoyed watching it. In this occasion there I wasn't  felt a knot in the stomach.
It didn't seem like the selection I knew. It was a smooth and orderly group that performed a very nice football to watch.
The huge result, formerly would have seemed extreme to me, but this time, it seemed normal. Italy did not exist as an opponent. Nor was the Italy that I knew.
The point is that when I was reading the press the next day it gave me goosebumps reading the headlines in Europe. It was all praise, all right, but I am refering to  the other issue.
In occasions like this is when you know that you are European. Before me were the headlines of the historic nations that have shaped the history of the world talking about the good time of the Spanish selection and the decline of the Italian.
It was nice to read allusions to the past. We are all old acquaintances. We share a common history. I felt I was within that group, I was European. It's like the marriage...for better and for worse. There have been many umpleasant events over the centuries, but also memorable episodes.
In occasions like this, I miss the American and French nationalism in the sense of feeling connected and involved in something. I miss to shape a large group, feel us united and strong.

Fellow

A veces encuentro una palabra inglesa que claramente no viene de latín, y me pregunto cómo se dirá en español. Tal es el caso para la palabra "fellow". A veces quiere decir simplemente "hombre", como en "He's a fine fellow." Pero el significado más común y útil es el de "compañero", y la usamos como un adjetivo. "He's a fellow traveler." = "Es un compañero de viaje." "I enjoy speaking with fellow engineers." = "Me gusta hablar con compañeros de la ingeniería." "Fellow" no quiere decir necesariamente que las personas viajan o trabajan juntas, sino que juegan el mismo papel, o comparten un interés. Una apertura frecuente en un discurso presidencial es "My fellow Americans...".

El autito de golf

Mi hermano tiene un autito de golf, solo para diversión. Lo usa para llevar a sus hijos alrededor del barrio, y desde su casa hasta la piscina cercana. Sin embargo, ahora están en el proceso de mudarse a una nueva casa. Por eso, están guardando el autito en mi casa por varias semanas. Lo manejamos alrededor del jardín, y a mis hijos les encanta conducirlo. Entiendo que sería legal tambien manejarlo en mi calle, pero eso es un riesgo que no quiero correr. Los vehículos suelen ir mucho más rapido que el límite de velocidad.

Samuel Champlain

Escucho una biografía de Samuel Champlain, un explorador francés del siglo XVII. Hasta ahora he aprendido sobre su familia y niñez en el sudoeste de Francia. Era una época de conflictos terribles entre católicos y protestantes, y esta experiencia le afectó para toda su vida. La turbina Pelton

Un amigo mio aprende sobre la turbina Pelton, así que decidí estudiarla también. Según Wikipedia, la turbina (o rueda) fue inventada en el siglo XIX por Lester Allan Pelton. Es un tipo de turbina hidráulica, una cuyo rendimiento superó el de otras turbinas en esa época. En una turbina Pelton, el agua entra con alta velocidad pero sale con muy poca. Esto significa que casi toda la energía cinética del agua se transfiere a la turbina, produciendo el máximo rendimiento posible. El diseño de Pelton se usa todavía en turbinas hidráulicas hoy en día.

An untimely match

In an hour will begin the match. I don't have the stomach for these nerves. Tomorrow, very early in the morning, at five o'clock I will be awake. It will be a hard morning. The work is frantic and hard. I have to stay well awake.
This night will be awfull for me. There is a bar below where always that a match like this has place people shouting and make a scandal  until late in the morning.
I will try sleep but tomorrow I know, it will cost me wake up.
