Kicking the Can Down the Road

Esta es un expresión, gráfica y un poco humorosa, que escuché por primera vez hace 5 años durante una reunión en mi trabajo. Hoy en día la escucho cada vez más frecuentemente. Me evoca una memoria desde mi niñez, cuando caminaba a la escuela, y a casa. A veces me encontraba con una lata, o una piedra, en la calle, y la pateaba a lo largo de la calle, no sólo una vez, sino repetidamente. Era una manera de pasar el tiempo.

Pues, ¿qué significa la expresión? Quiere decir que alguien está posponiendo una cuestión que, en realidad, debe ser abordado ahora. Además, a mí la expresión implica que la cuestión ya ha sido pospuesta y será aplazada otra vez. Cómo la lata rebotando a lo largo de la calle.

A propósito, ví en el internet una explicación de la expresión, relacionándola con un juego de niños llamado "Kick the Can". Creo que es una equivocación, porque el objetivo del juego es dar una pateada tan grande como posible, y no captura la repetición de la acción.

Yellowjackets

Esta tarde mi hermano y su suegro han venido a mi casa para recoger su refrigerador que me había prestado cuando no funcionaba el mio. Lo llevamos de la casa y bajamos las escaleras exteriores. Sin embargo, en el fondo de la escalera, o mi hermano o el refrigerador pisó un nido de avispas con pintas amarillas ("yellowjackets" en inglés). De inmediato salieron del nido y atacaron. Huimos en la casa a máxima velocidad. Resultaron mi hermano picado dos veces y su suegro seis veces. Yo escapé sin lesión. El enjambre de avispas volaron por el área por mucho tiempo después. Hasta ahora el refrigerador se queda en el fondo de la escalera. Tengo la intención de moverlo al garaje después de anochecer, cuando las avispas se habrán acostado.

Los días de la semana y los meses del año se escriben con mayúscula
Como mencionó el artículo, este error viene del inglés, donde no es un error sino una regla. A mí, me parece algo como "january 3" muy raro, y me cuesta mucho evitar escribir "3 Enero".

“Que”, cuando pertenece a una oración exclamativa o interrogativa, lleva tilde
Faltando la tilde, no tenemos este problema en inglés.

El punto y coma (“;”) es una pausa intermedia entre el punto (“.”) y la coma (“,”)
Los angloparlantes también se equivocan en el uso del punto y la coma ("semicolon"). Me parece que la regla en español es igual a la inglesa. Aquí está una cita graciosa desde el autor Kurt Vonnegut:

Here is a lesson in creative writing. First rule: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you've been to college.

Las mayúsculas no se acentúan
Una vez más, nos alegramos de la ausencia de la tilde. Creo que este error en español es más común que la obediencia a la regla. Como decimos en inglés, es una regla "more honoured in the breach than the observance" (Shakespeare).

¡Alunizaje!

Acabo de encontrar la palabra "alunizaje" en un artículo sobre la muerte de Neil Armstong, el primer ser humano en pisar la luna. ¡Qué excelente palabra! No tenemos tal palabra en inglés. Ya sabía la palabra "aterrizaje", y la habría usado en el contexto, pero "alunizaje" es mucho más específica y expresiva. Si algún día llegamos a otro planeta, ¿habrá un amartizaje o un avenizaje? Tal vez esas palabras ya se hayan utilizado en las obras de ficción científico. En inglés todo que tenemos es la humilde "landing", y hablamas del "moon landing" o "landing on the moon". Bueno, me pregunto si Amstrong podría ser llamado el primer "alunizajero".

Quehaceres del fin de semana

Aplicar insecticida para detener que las hormigas entren en la cocina.
Lavar el bote de basura (apesta).
Reparar o reemplazar una lámpara en el sótano.
Arreglar los papeles y cajas de libros escolares en la cocina.
Hacer algún tipo de ejercicio físico.
Hablar por medio de Skype o verbling.
¡Tomar una buena siesta!

Tu marca personal

He tomado una clase esta semana, el miércoles, en mi trabajo. Trató de la marca personal de uno, que es la suma de las impresiones que les da a las personas con las cuales se relaciona. Comienza con la "primera impresión", que se realiza en sólo tres segundos. La primera impresión se resulta de cómo te vistes, hablas y te comportas mientras que conoces a una persona por primera vez. La marca personal es también las cualidades que se destacan en tu comportamiento general. Puede incluir cualidades como paciencia, energía, cuidado de los detalles... entre mucho más. El tema de la clase era que cada persona tiene una marca personal, y se importa saber cuál es la tuya, cómo mejorarla, y cómo aprovecharla en tu trabajo y en otros terrenos de tu vida.

"El telón" (II)

Te gustará saber que en castellano, the Iron Curtain se conocía como "Telón de Acero"..., doblemente aumentado por el sufijo -ón de telón, y porque estaba hecho de acero (steel), que siempre es más duro que el hierro (iron).

El telón

Mi palabra del día es "telón", una palabra que escucho desde hace mucho tiempo en el refrán de un podcast, "¡Qué se abra el telón!" Ya sabía que quería decir, pero otro día decidí a buscarla en el diccionario. Reconocí el sufijo -ón como un aumentativo, pero ¿Qué fue un telo/a? El diccionario me dijo que es "tela", y quiere decir "un tipo de obra tejida". Lo que me interesó más fue "telaraña", la "tela de una araña". Pues, esto me hizo contemplar "araña", y pensé de la palabra inglesa "arachnid" (arácnido). En resumen, creo que "a weaving" es un buen sinónimo de "una tela" y que la "telaraña" es el "weaving of a spider". Si no sabes el verbo "to weave", aquí está un refrán que puedes contemplar: "Oh what a tangled web we weave, When first we practise to deceive!" Si eso no te convienes a ti, puedes escuchar la canción "Dream Weaver" en youtube.

Las Novelas

Al hablar de leer libros, me gustan leer novelas escrito en español. Yo no me preocupo si no entiendo todas las palabras, si entiendo la historia entonces es suficiente para mí, pero si hay palabras que no la sé y se repiten muchas veces, entonces yo escribo la significa de la palabra adentro el libro.  He encontrado que eso me ayuda mucho con mi español.  En las últimas semanas he estado leyendo una novela que se llama El Zahir por Paulo Coelho,  lo conoces a este autor?

Cupo

Acabo de toparme con la palabra "cupo", y podía percibir por el contexto que quería decir "capacidad", pero me sorprendía que ya no la he encontrado antes. La busqué en mi diccionario de bolsillo, pero no había allí. WordReference indica que el primer significado es "quota", pero el segundo, sólo en Latinoamerica, es "capacidad", como he deducido. ¿Quiere decir que este significado no se usa en España? ¿A los españoles les parece raro "una sala con cupo para 300 personas"? Otra pregunta, basada en la conjugación, es -- ¿El sustantivo "cupo" se relaciona al verbo "caber"? Bueno, esta me conduce a una pregunta más... ¿El verbo "caber" se relaciona a "capacidad"? ¿Que piensas tu? ¡Disculpame por todas las preguntas!

Cualquier cosa

Creo que no he escrito nada desde hace una semana o más... el buen hábito está muriendo... Hemos tenido visitantes durante las dos últimas semanas, y ahora mi sobrino se hospeda con nosotros.

Mi familia está viendo la película "Tuck Everlasting". Es basada en un libro que tiene lo mismo nombre. Hace algun tiempo comenzé de leerlo en español -- se llamaba "Tuck Para Siempre". Sin embargo, creo que no lo terminé. Todavía me cuesta mucho leer libros, incluso los para jóvenes, principalmente debido al vocabulario. Me parece que cada página tiene palabras desconocidas, y no me acostumbro de saltarme palabras que no conozco.

- Usain Bolt was again the king of the track and field competitions. The Jamaican cemented his legacy after being the first man who wins the 100m and 200m in back-to-back Olympic games. In addition, his anchor leg in the 4 x 100m relay sealed a spectacular world record. A superb performance!

- Kudos to the London 2012 organizing committee. The punctuality of the events, the impressive quality of the TV transmission, the British humor in the opening ceremony, the tidy sports venues, and the Londoners' hospitality were praised by almost everybody. The world will miss the “God Save the Queen.”

Qué rapido los niños crecen.  Mi nieta tiene diez y siete años y hoy he oído que ha aprobado los exámenes, no sólo aprobado pero recibió altos resultados de los exámenes.  Ella quiere asistir la universidad y eventualmente quiere ser una político jejejjej Tal vez la próxima Primer Ministro.   Mañana ella tiene otra exámen para aplicar su licencia de conducir.  !Vaya! espero las carreteras estarán vacio!!!!!!!

Legend of Gara & Jonay

The beautiful young girl Gara lived in Gomera, where a lake was considered a foreteller to help teenagers to get a true love. When Gara asked the lake, it told her to be afraid of fire.

During local festivals she met Jonay (a handsome boy from Tenerife island). As soon as they fell in love, Teide volcano erupted. Their love was forbidden by their parents, and Jonay was invited to leave Gomera island.

Jonay swam for hours to see his beloved. Threatened by the forbidden, they met in Gomera Island's highest point. They took a stick, sharpening its top and bottom, and they put the stick in their stomachs, and they held each other in a ethernal embrace.


Nowadays, this point is called Garajonay in honour of the couple and it is National Park from 1981.

"Gandía Shore"

Nobody knew in Spain what Jersey Shore is. Nobody could know how a Mtv reality based on gym, tan, and laundry- to get ready to spend the night out - has become a pop culture phenomenon (including university studies!).

This reality is been shooted in Spain nowadays: it will be called "Gandía Shore": Gandía is a mediterranean touristy village where this BigBrother with license to go out (to pubs mainly) has opened the door...

The first news about this reality in Spain is that a girl has threatened and has hammered her shoe's heel into the neck of other person. Drama is served.

Unfortunatelly, Spanish version is no different from the original reality... The scene that made the show an instant sensation in the USA was pretty similar: a girl punched by someother in the show (with no stop, help or aid from the cameras, or producers). It worked in the USA and it seems that it could have been copied as a publicitary action...

Definetly, Spain is not different, at all!...

Mascotas

Estamos cuidando las mascotas de una vecina, mientras que está de vacaciones. Tiene dos perros y un gato. Los perros son muy divertidos. Son perros grandes, con mucha energía y entusiasmo. Cuando les damos la comida, la engullen en 30 segundos, y luchan para los restos. El gato es más misterioso. La última vez que hicimos esta tarea, nunca lo vimos, pero éstos días, lo hemos visto dos veces. No nos parece muy simpático.

Las Fresas

Me encanta esta estación del año, cuando llegan las fresas inglésas en las tiendas.  En la primavera muchas fresas  son importadas de países como Marruecos y España pero la verdad es que no hay fresas que tienen lo mismo sabor como las fresas de Inglaterra. Creo que podría ser debido al hecho de la cantidad de lluvia que tenemos en Inglaterra la que hace que la fresas más dulces y jugosas.  Gracias a la manera que son cultivada con cubiertas para protegerlas, la estación de las fresas dura más larga y yo como tantas como pueda jejejej.

Optometría

Estoy en una consulta del optómetra, esperando mi cita. Es el tiempo de examinar mis ojos y obtener nuevos anteojos. Puedo percibir que mis ojos se han cambiado desde mi última visita. Probablemente trataré lentes progresivas. Mi esposa las usa, y mi hermano mayor me las recomendó. Suele costarme eligir nuevos anteojos, sólo porque hay demasiado decisiones que tomar.  Además, estamos al fin del día, y estoy cansado y tengo hambre. Talvez volveré otro día para considerar las opciones.

El Veep

El fin de semana el candidato presidencial republicano anunció su elección del candidato para vice-presidente. En los EEUU los dos candidatos se presentan como un equipo. Esta es siempre una decisión importante para un candidato presidencial, y se escudriña por los medios de comunicación y las críticas. Hace cuatro años, la nombramiento de Sarah Palin, una mujer bastante desconocida, generó muchas emociones, pero ella no fue bien preparada para el escrutinio de un candidato nacional. Esta vez, el candidato para "Veep" es bien conocido por sus propósitos presupuestarios, y los afectos correspondientes de impuestos y beneficios. Sólo el pasaje de tiempo revelará si la elección es una buena o una mala.

Olympic Games of Thrones...

Before the falling of the USSR, Olympics were intended to show each 4 years what country / what system was better; capitalism vs. comunism were tested bearing in mind the number of gold medals USA and USSR got. Dope technologies were developed to support this propaganda.

Wu Minxia, chinese sportwoman in London 2012, was notified that her grandmather had died during her training for the games months ago and her mother has been suffering from a cancer after wining 2 gold medals in London 2012. She wasn't been notified before to avoid a lack of concentration during the training. China started a program to pass USA olympics medals during Beijing 2008 Games. In 4 years (from Athenas 2004 to Peking 2008) China doubled its medals, from 63 to 110 in Beijing.

Many efforts have been done to control doping. But reading the story of Wu Minxia, it seems to be that drugs has been replaced by psychological technologies, that are invisible to drug test, but perhaps could be as damageful to the sportsmen as doping.

Only time will tell.

La galleta de la suerte

Hace mucho tiempo ví una foto muy graciosa, y pienso en ella casi cada vez que como en un restaurante chino. La foto muestra una persona que está leyendo el mensaje de una galleta de la suerte. En el fondo se queda un plato vacío, indicando que la persona ya ha terminado la comida. La mensaje de la galleta es -- Eso no era pollo. Puedes ver la foto por una búsqueda web de "fortune cookie that wasn't chicken".

Ayer, he oído las noticias que siete atletas de Somalia han desaparecido desde la villa olímpica!!!!   Aparentamente nadie sabe donde están pero son libres para venir y ir como desean y tienen permiso quedarse en Gran Bretaña hasta Noviembre.  Esta noticia no me soprenda, de hecho, al principio de las olimpiadas me pregunté cuántos atletas querra buscar asilo cuando lleguen aquí.

Mind over Matter

"Mind over Matter" -- es una expresión que se refiere a la capacidad de la mente para dominar el cuerpo. Todos sabemos ejemplos de un atleta que ha superado una herida o una enfermedad para participar en un concurso, incluso ganarlo. Otro ejemplo es el rendimiento de equipos cuando juegan en sus propios estadios. El apoyo de la multitud es una gran ventaja. Los vítores actuan en la mente, y la mente conduce el cuerpo a nuevos niveles de desempeño.

Las Olimpiadas

!Las lágrimas de alegría para nuestro atleta!!!!!.  Chris Hoy se ha convertido en el atleta más exitoso en  Gran Bretaña con seis medallas de oro con la edad de treinta y seis años.  ¿Él estará en Río de jeneiro?  ¿Quien Sabe?   Ayer Gran Bretaña nuevamente ha tenido un día con mucho éxito. Hasta ayer hemos ganado  veintidos medallas de oro, sin contar las otras de plata y bronce.  Viva Gran Bretaña!!!!

¿Quién es?

Algún desconocido ha ganó la medalla de oro en el tenís. Creo que viene de una isla en el atlántico del norte, talvez Islandia, no estoy seguro. Pero me parece que a la muchedumbre le gustó mucho el resultado. Por cierto, el partido fue ¡una zurra!

Los Juegos Olimpicos

El equipo G.B. ganó seis medallas ayer.  Después del comienzo muy despacio en los primeros días en que G.B. no había ganado ningunas medallas, pero las últimos días han producido medallas de oro para el equipo G.B.  Las últimas vitorias han llevado el equipo GB en la tercera posición con veinte y nueve medallas, catorce de oro, siete de plata y ocho de bronce.  La estrella del equipo GB es Jessica Ennis y creo que se ha convertido en una persona muy famosa en Gran Bretaña.  Gran Bretaña ha cambiado en un país dedicado a ver deportes incluso la gente que no le gusta el deporte, por ejemplo muchas mujeres, que normalmente no tienen ganas de ver deporte.

Está mañana estaba viendo la televisión para ver el maratón a través las calles de Londres, qué bonita la pista de carreras, se puede ver la Torre de Londres, La Catedral de Santo Paulo, el Palacio de Buckingham y muchos más lugares muy famosos, realmente estaba viendo la paisaje en vez de  la carrera jejejej

Ahora mismo el juego de tenis está a punto de comenzar entre Federe Y Murray, supongo que sabes quien yo quiera ganar jejejejej

Olympic Diary II

Puerto Rico has never won an Olympic gold medal. Our Olympic athletes have won several silver and bronze medals in boxing, but a gold medal has always escaped from our hands. However, on Monday our luck may change.

Our maximum expectations are in the men's 400 meters hurdles with Javier Culson. Culson has been dominant throughout the year in his event and has the season-best mark before the Olympic Games. He arrived to London in the best mental and physical condition of his life. On Friday in the quarterfinals and yesterday in the semis, Culson finished first in his heats and with the second best time among all athletes.

All the planets are lined up for Culson. The men's 400 meters hurdles final will be on Monday at 20:45 British Time (3:45 p.m. Eastern Time). If you watch the race, Culson is the tall and slim guy with a headband in lane 5. We have our fingers crossed for Culson. Good luck!

What is happening in our society?

It happened two or three weeks ago. I was listening to the radio when suddenly in the news, the journalist began to talk about a serious incident in a cinema of a city of USA. This piece of news had a strong impact not only in the American society but also in the rest of the world. Everyone cried for this incident. Obama cried too.

I wonder myself what is happening in our society. Why the actors, the new heros ( a lot of times irreal characters) are converted like example for our young people? Where is the problem? Is the problem in our education system? or in the families? I don't know but in my opinion, I haven't found any explanation.

Everybody know that famous characters are a marketing product. And I think there is the main problem. A lot of times, people who have to sell a film, a character .... never think about the future repercussions in our society. I think, in the schools and in the families, everybody have to talk about the danger of these characters.... but both ways have to go together.

Yesterday I was watching this film. shots shots shots.... someone thought that he would be able to do real shots.... at the end .... everybody know the result.

Never had I thought that an irreal film with irreal characters would have serious consecuences in our society. Remember Batman is batman. Never has existed.

Think about this.

Rural depopulation

Today Saturday we have gone for a trip. The content or excuse was a lunch for which previously you had to be registered. But, the main reason was to give something of life to a region consisting of fourteen very small villages. This region is named Camero Viejo. The meal has been celebrated in the smaller one, Hornillos. In winter the population is about four families. In Summer grows until fifty people.
It is perhaps a common phenomenon in other Spanish regions and even in other countries. People wants the city comodities, sacrificing, in exchange, peace and quiet and to live surrounded by a wonderful countryside.

This is normal. In winter living conditions are very harsh.

The event has been a succes. People in August are ready to leave home for any excuse at weekends. According to organizers, among whom were our friends, we have come about a thousand people.
We all have had a really good time, but the really sad is that the majority of these small villages are doomed to extinction.

It is sad, but life is like that.

Noruega y Islandia

Regresé de mis vacaciones hace cuatro días.  Fui con mi marido a los Fiordos de Noruega y Islandia.  Qué bonitos son los Fiordos y qué misterioso Islandia.  La población en Islandia es tan bajo, y todo parece nuevo, los edificios y calles están muy limpias.  La guía nos dijo que probablemente Islandia es el país más limpio del mundo, porque tomen todo su energía desde bajo la tierra lo que tambien ofrece las piscinas con agua caliente la que están en todos los pueblos. También apenas hay crimen. No es una sorpresa que en Islandia segun la guía su pasatiempo favorito es nadar y despues pasa tiempo en las bañeras calientes chismorreando con sus venicos.  Islandia da la impresión de espacio, las cuidades son pequeñas y en el campo hay gran espacios entre los vecinos.  No hay muchos árboles y tiene algunos bosques muy pequeños de los que son muy ogullosos.  Pero tambien tienen un bromeo que va así - si estás perdido en el bosque de Islandia justo paso atrás y vas a ver donde está jejejejeje

For some reason, now that I have time to relax, several remaining tasks are coming to my head.

I have been thinking all these days, that it´s time to bring the car to do the review and changing oil. I am a bit worried for the question of the timing belt. I think that its final hours are coming and if I do not go to the garage soon I could have a  serious annoyance ¿?. That I will be upset, it is sure, at least in the economic.

Another issue of concern, it is the health.
There are several matters that I have outstanding. My teeth and my stomach are the most urgent in these moments. As for my mouth, I have been watching lately that the gums are receding and some back teeth have notches. As for my digestive apparatus, after so many nerves and tension in the last months, accompanied all by high doses of coffee and a deficient diet, over all in fruit, I think something it is not well in my system. I think that the problem with the teeth it is also in relation with the diet.

Well, no more worries for today.

Runner-up y also-ran

Los juegos olímpicos y el mundo político son los ambientes de estas palabras, ambas de las cuales utilizan el verbo "to run". El "runner-up" es la persona que termina un concurso en segundo lugar. No sé el origen de la palabra ni que quiere decir el "up" en ella. Es una palabra muy común -- seguro que se puede escuchar en los comentarios sobre los juegos olímpicos.

Por otro lado, sé exactamente de donde viene "also-ran". En el reportaje sobre los resultados de una campaña política, se puede decir que "Fernández won; Pérez came in second; Hernández y Martínez also ran." Es decir, Hernández y Martínez eran "also-rans". Un "also-ran" es un candidato que atrajo poca atención desde los medios de comunicación y también de los votantes.

More war, and "All the bullets ricochet!!"

Today, I was watching television in english of course. Personally, I do not watch TV in order to spend time but to learn English. Well, the simple fact of the matter is this...
I was watching a program about materials and tools of war. They were talking about an especial bullet proof glass cube. This is often used to build especial cars for presidents or VIP people, like the current Pope. But also It is used on big football stadiums, like the Barcelona Stadium. There, they have a bullet proof glass for important people too, so they can enjoy the match inside. From high up in the stands they can watch everything safely.
Also in that video, I could learn the phrase: "But all their bullets ricochet". This is a very interesting sentence because, I did not know the word RICOCHET.
There, they also proved TITANIUM but is a heavy and expensive material. The titanium was fired away with a powerful war rifle and endured the bullets. They tested the TI with a Machine Gun and even so, all the bullets were halted. It is a good material and with it they have nothing to lose, except for money. 
Of course, Kevlar was mentioned several times, but that is a topic for another entry, he!.  

Sentences and Story

Hello, How is all going on? Today, I have many sentences and a short story.

Sentences:
I am being useful of somehow.
I am not in/of a good mood.
I am awful with new languages, I always get lost at new words.
Is Belarus language resembled to another language from near by?
They always mix some words and invent new words as well. It applies to people who learn English like a second language and have Spanish like native language.
Have you seen a video on youtube that likes you?
I prefer the video which showed the photos meanwhile.
I recall a teacher vividly.
That was the pleasentest year that I let in that school.

Story:
I heard a story about war on the BBC World Service today.
It was a about a private of the 2nd World War. He was called Bringg Roberts or somethng like that. Like most of the prisoners of war he was took away to a camp. Fortunately, he survived because of he knew three languages, German and Polish and English. He was responsible for the translations. Hehe, lucky guy.
There, we have one more example about why is so important learning another language. It can saves your life in war times.

¿Gun-shy o trigger-happy?

Escuché estas dos frases ayer por la radio, en un artículo sobre la política extranjera de Mitt Romney, el candidato republicano para la presidencia. Se dijo que ningún candidato quiere ser visto como "gun-shy" ni "trigger-happy". Ser "gun-shy" (avergonzado con armas) es ser vacilante o reacio a usar fuerza militar para lidiar con problemas. "Trigger-happy" (feliz de tirar el gatillo?) es el opuesto. Uno que es "trigger-happy" es rápido de emplear las fuerzas armadas en disputas internacionales. ¿El español tiene expresiones semejantes a estas? Otras palabras que se usan en círculos políticos para expresar la distinción son "doves" (palomas) y "hawks" (halcones), pero supongo que se usan tales términos en cada idioma.
