The Puncture

It had to happen. I had never had a puncture in a bicycle wheel. I sometimes  take in my backpack a kit with several patch or an inner tube, but this time I took nothing.
It was last Friday afternoon. I wanted to go for a long walk with my kids riding our bikes. The warm weather is coming and we must  be ready. This summer I want to take the sport seriously, above all cycling and swimming.
This school year, which is about to end, everything has been homework and exams for my oldest son and this added to bad weather has resulted be a very sedentary year for him. He and his brother have practiced a lot of indoor sports such as swimming in heated pool or tennis in an indoor track, but this summer I would like they could spend as much time as possible outdoors.

Well, the thing is that when we were at about 1.5 km from house, my oldest son screamed: "I have got a puncture". I stopped my bike and I put my hands on my head. It's ok, this had to happen at any time. This happens to me for fool. I had thought of everything  except, probably, the most essential. I was very trusting. Well, perhaps no. This was a possibility which I had not considered seriously. I only took the kit and the tools when I remembered to do it.

These are things which take up room, are a nuisance, catch dust, etc, but which on any occasion will be required and... What is that you did with them?. (Now, I am reminding of the first aid kit of my car,...How long will be past the expiry date?).

Well, thank God, we were near home. My younger son was going his way with his bike, my oldest son with mine and I, feeling something of embarrasment, was going pushing my son's bike with my hands.

Now, the wheel is repaired. I'm afraid, from now on, I will carry more weight on my back.

Good story. We usually say that we got "a flat tire".

*better: I would like them to spend as much time...

**I'm not sure if this is what you wanted to say.

  2. Thanks Matt. Yes, I wanted to say that. Here we say:

    - Eso//esto me pasa//me ha pasado//te ha pasado por tonto//estúpido//imbécil//bobo//confiado//imprudente//gracioso.....

  3. A more common way to say it: This is what I get for being a fool.
