Spring ....

As each year, with the arrival of sprign, we have to do the change, that always we do in the same time. In some states of The USA they did in the firs or second weekend of March, but here in Europe whe have to do tonight. When in our clock is 2.00 am suddenly will be 3.00 , so tonight we will sleep an hour less.
And I wonder myself, if this chage is good or now for our society. We will save natural resources or not? This change, as the Autom change it takes me a long time to addapt me. But we cant't do anything.
Today in all word, we are going to celebrate the Planet's hour. At 9.00 and for one minute or more ( i don't know), the light of all public buildings will be reduce. Is it a good measure to make aware people of the importance of our enviroment and the good use of natural resources. I think, that this measure it's a waste of time and money and the money that they say that they are going to save, should be destinated to good causes, to help people .......
All around us is policies .....

Polar station Amundsen-Scott

Means

Anoche chateaba con un hombre y quería decir que un cierto político no tiene el apoya de los con "means", una palabra inglesa que se refiere a dinero, educación, experiencia, contactos, etc. No pude pensar en una palabra equivalente en español. Me condució el diccionario a "medios", pero me dijo mi amigo que esa usualmente se refiere a los medios de comunicación. Más tarde pensé en "recursos", cuya definición en el diccionario incluye "means".

"Means" tiene otros significados de los que te has dado cuenta, sin duda. Quiere decir "quiere decir" como en "What does that mean?" Es también un sinónomo de "averages" (promedios) en el mundo de matemática. (¡Qué fascinante que "means" quiere decir ambos "medios" y "promedios"!) Además, quizás te hayas encontrado con "mean" como un adjetivo, un sinónomo de "cruel". Hace mucho años había un jugador de fútbol americano llamado Mean Joe Green. Supongo que este significado vino de la aplicación de "promedio" a personas que no era de la alta clase.

Medicina alternative III

Punto 2: Nos dirían los defensores de la medicina alternativa que el proceso de ensayos clínicos no sea tan objetivo como esperaríamos. Los ensayos cuestan tanto que sólo las grandes empresas farmacéuticas pueden pagarlas. Y los intereses de las empresas no siempre están conformes con los de los pacientes. Los gigantes farmacéuticos quieren vender drogas, no mostrar que un tratamiento más natural y más sencillo sea eficaz igualmente. Yo no digo que acepte esta excusa para la falta de ensayos, pero puedo entender los factores económicos que se citan, y puedo dudar que los mejores métodos siempre alcancen el mercado.

Medicina alternativa II

Voy a responder al escrito de Vicent sobre la medicina alternativa. Tengo dos puntos, uno de la historia y otro de la industria farmacéutica. Este escrito cubre punto 1. Hace unos pocos meses escuché un libro sobre la "biografía" de cáncer, y relató el desarrollo de la mastectomía radical como un tratamiento de cáncer de mama, un desarrollo que tuvo lugar en la primer mitad del siglo XX. La técnica se puso muy famosa y se convertieron los cirujanos en héroes en la comunidad médica. Sus métodos se pusieron cada vez más radical, quitando cada vez más partes del cuerpo - mama, músculo, hasta hueso. Esto continuó durante décadas. El tratamiento estaba aceptado sin dudas, aunque dejó a las pacientes muy desfiguradas y, en los peores casos, incapacitadas, habiendo perdido el uso de sus brazos. Finalmente, en los años 50, algunas personas comenzaron a retar la base del procedimiento y el hecho de que nunca se han realizado ensayos clínicos. Cuando se realizaron tales ensayos, mostraron que el procedimiento no era más eficaz que métodos menos radicales, incluso cirugía, radiación y quimoterapia. Hoy en día esperamos que todos los métodos de medicina convencional estén respaldados por evidencia, pero no siempre han estado así.

Should alternative medicine be tested in the same way that conventional medicine?

There is no doubt that medicine has always been one the most remarkable sciences. One hundred  years ago, as a consequence of the improvement of new technologies, scientists started to subject their research to clinical trial giving way to what we know today as mainstream medicine, a science in which everything is tested before putting into the pharmacological and medical market, but this has not been always the case.

At the very beginning, doctors, looking for the source of illnesses, used to try on patients therapies and medicines without being previously tested and, as a result, they put on risk patients’ lives, something that, in my opinion, not only was extremely risky but it also did not guarantee the healing of the diseases.

All these untested products and treatments make up what is known as alternative medicine, a huge business all around the world. This business is based on legends, beliefs and techniques that sometimes have damning results on patients and moreover, in the majority of cases, taking advantage of the lack of control over them, everything is sham, doctors and treatments.

There are those who think that alternative medicine offers us natural treatments which allow us to heal from even severe illnesses. Maybe they are right to some extent but, I strongly believe that alternative medicine methods should be tested profoundly by the health authorities before allowing their purchase. Once the effectiveness of products and therapies had been checked properly, they might get into the conventional medicine and be prescribed by ‘real’ doctors, the ones who have a ‘real’ career, after studying for many years at the University.

All in all, health is very important for us and there are occasions in which we feel desperate, mainstream medicine does not solve our health problem and we, looking for hope, find a shelter in alternative medicine. Be that as it may, I am in the belief that everything related to health should be by far more regulated in order to offer us more than hope.

La actualización

Esta mañana he tenido que renovar mi licencia de manejar/conducir. Diez años ya habían pasado desde que me mudé a este estado (todos los estados expiden sus propias licencias). Poco en el proceso ha cambiado durante los 10 años — la oficina parece igual, todos los oficinistas son mujeres (no sé porqué), los clientes ilustran la diversidad de la población). Una clara mejora es que hoy en día la agencia tiene un página web, donde se puede ver el número de personas que están en la cola para que se puede llegar a una hora óptima. Al llegar, yo tenía que esperar sólo un minuto para hablar con la recepcionista, pero al salir había seis personas en la fila. Por supuesto, los detalles de la licencia han cambiado desde hace 2004, con un estilo más moderno, más medidas de seguridad, y el rostro de un hombre más distinguido por 10 años de vida.

Roberto: I'm fine thanks, Ukraine is the centre of attention

Karina: I can say, just that we lost the Crimea, and now all country is afraid that we can lose north part

Karina: it's very bad that now in Russian and another part od Ukraine the mass media is a psychological prison that turns humans beings into obedient mental slaves, so we don't agree with Russia, because a lot of information is lie.

Roberto: But Ukraine belonged to Russia before 1950
Karina: yes it's true, we with Russia since 1654. But in 1991 we are independent

Roberto: What do you think it is going to happen?
Karina: really, I don't know. I'm afraid that can be start war, but hope that we live in intelligent world and all problems can be solved peacefully

Roberto: What do you think about Putin?
Karina: I think that it is amiss, because people are suffering especially Ukrainian people

Roberto: Do you really mean that he obey to someone?
Karina: It's hard because I really I don't know. At the start I think that USA have a power over him, but we lose the Crimea, I don't know. I think he did not surrender

Roberto: It's hard imaging to Putin obey to Obama.
Karina: yes, I know it but I mean different situation, for example like Group of  Eight. it isn't Obama, but USA was very active in this situation

Roberto: I understand your text but I don't get it
Karina: Oh it's very hard explain in English.

Roberto: Take your time
Karina: I want say that at the start when all this situation with the Crimea started USA and Germany are very active, say that they threatened Russia will withdraw from the Group of Eight, they negociated, Ukranians thought that that it somehow affect the decision Russia, but Putin has managed all very cleverly turnin their favor, without many serious problems for their powers and his country.

Karina: and now I don't now think that he really isn't obey to anyone.

Karina: I hope you were able to understand the flow of my thoughts 

Roberto: It's difficult to do something because Putin has a lot of power an anybody wants a war.
Karina: yes, I agree with you

Roberto: Now Putin could easily invade Ukraine
Karina: I hope that this will not happen. I hope he is satisfied with the Crimea for the first time, my country need time to at least improve the economy, but he certanly enjoyed our helpessness

Ukraine II

I understand your reasons Matt, but I think that the problem is how Russia do the things, because the respect International rights is the only way to avoid wars especially front of the powerful. If we justify illegal violent actions then we would return the time several centuries ago. We have to look for the way to solve conflicts without creating new conflicts. At the beginning of Ukraine crisis, Putin told that Russia wouldn't involve that issue, He lied because he worried about his interests in Black Sea. Putin has taken advantage a political and militar oportunity, and he shows its might ignoring the international diplomacy. In my opinion, we have to focus in the legal borders movement process, of the contrary, we will create new conflicts.

Ucrania

Tengo que decir que me parecen las acciones de Rusia en Crimea no tan injustas como declaman los líderes del Oeste. Hablan como si no hubiera ningún relación entre los rusos y los habitantes de la península. ¿No es verdad que la Crimea era parte de Rusia por mucho tiempo antes de los años 1950? Me acuerdo del aprendizaje sobre la Guerra de Crimea que tuvo lugar en 1854. Recuerdo que el UK y Rusia estaban involucrados. Pero no me recuerdo de ninguna mención de Ucrania. No sé las razones detrás de la transferencia desde Rusia hasta Ucrania, pero supongo que fue un gesto de solidaridad entre miembros de la Unión Soviética. El hecho es que la mayoría de los habitantes de la región ha tenido siempre ruso como su lengua materna, y se ven el idioma ucranio y la cultura ucrania como extranjeros. Antes de 1991 y la caída de la Unión Soviética, no importa todo esto. Pero con la independencia de Ucrania surgió naturalmente las preguntas: ¿Qué es el papel de Crimea en este nuevo país? ¿Por qué debemos mantener una unión con extranjeros y una separación de nuestros compatriotas naturales? No digo que las acciones de Rusia son completamente inocentes, pero decir que los eventos son un simple acto de agresión es negar las verdades de la historía. Los críticos tendrían más credibilidad si reconocieran la historia real.

Fondillon wine

This is the kind of wine found in an English ship wrecked of 1813 under the sea in Tarragona coast, wine shipload was taken in Alicante. This ship was part of a eighteen-group in war against the French of Napoleon. The English attack failed and in their escape five ships  beached at the coast.

This is the wine is drunk by kings, princes and cardinals and it was used to combat scurvy in ships too. The most surprising thing is that the wine is intact as well as barrel of 1798.

Otra visita

El domingo voy a viajar con mi hija a otro estado, para visitar una universidad a la que podría asistir ella en el otoño. Es una universidad que no consideríamos normalmente, debido a que su reputación está limitada a tener uno de los mejores equipos de fútbol americano en el país. Pero nos ha captado la atención por ofrecer a mi hija una beca que cubriría todos los gastos excepto los de alojamiento y pensión, una oferta difícil de ignorar. Nos hemos enterado también que la universidad tiene un colegio para estudiantes avanzados, que provee clases con mejores profesores y menos estudiantes. Tengo un colega cuya hija visitó la universidad hace unos pocos años y tenía las mismas dudas que tenemos nosotros, y a ella le enamoró la escuela por su visita. Dudo que vaya a pasar el mismo con mi hija (a estas alturas prefiere otras opciones), pero ya veremos. Yo tengo que guardar alguna imparcialidad, para que pueda tomar mi hija su propia decisión correspondiente a sus intereses.

Something about The USA

I've just arrived from The USA, after having enjoyed for 10 days there. I can say that all in The USA is Big. Amazing. People are friendly and I very very polite. Their upbringing is easy to notice.
Apart from all these things, I would like to write about a Natural Park, which I had the chance to visit: The Arches Natural Park in UTAH. When my friends told me that we were going to visit, It was a surprise for me. I was searching on the net and I saw a desert landscape , sometimes it looked like a place near from the place where I live.
But at the end, nothing to compare with my surrounding. The reddish colour of the land, stones sculpted or erosioned by the air were a real surprise for me. Sometimes I wonder, where are the horses, the indians ... like in the movies.
The art has been made by the nature for ages. Amazing place. One more, The nature surpise us again. After 9 hours, walking, taking pictures I wanted to be there more time because I needed to visit two arches more.

Por otros ojos

He comenzado a leer el libro "El mundo por los ojos árabes", un nuevo libro de la biblioteca, escrito por Shibley Telhami. No conozco al autor, pero la dedicación del libro nos cuenta algo: "En memoria de mis padres, a quien se había impedido por guerra lograr sus sueños, pero quien tenían el coraje para enviar a su primogénito adolescente a través de un continente y un oceano para realizar los suyos." Me interesa el tema del libro porque, obviamente, hay una gran diferencia de opinión sobre muchas cuestiones entre el mundo árabe y el mundo oeste. A veces me han dejado estupefacto los puntos de vista que ha expresado líderes árabes, el periódico Al Jazeera, etc. Es importante a veces "caminar en los zapatos de otra persona", como decimos en inglés.

Sólo estoy en el medio de capítulo uno, así que no sé si el libro sea bueno o malo, pero sé que la base del libro es encuestas que ha realizado el autor en seis países árabes desde 1990, y las tendencias que ha observado en los resultados. En el primer capítulo, habla de la importancia de construir las preguntas del sondeo con cuidado. Por ejemplo, para una pregunta sobre líderes árabes, y a quién se admira más, era necesario incluir la frase "fuera de su país" para evitar la ira de líderas locales.

Si continúo a leer el libro, espero que encuentre otras anécdotas de las que puedo escribir en español.

Fragilidad

Mi padre sigue recuperándose de una fractura de cadera. Se cayó hace unas pocas semanas y, con su edad de 86 años, todo es difícil. Antes del accidente, estaba en buena forma para su edad, habiendo ejercido regularmente en un gimnasio, pero el proceso lento de sanación y los varios días de inactividad tuvieron un gran efecto perjudicial. Su equilibrio ya estaba no tan bueno, y su caída le ha dado aún más miedo de caerse otra vez. Otra dificultad es que se queda en un centro de rehabilitación, donde el ambiente es extraño y se siente a veces aislado. Cada evento como este nos muestra la fragilidad de los ancianos, una fragilidad que va más allá de lo físico, incluyendo lo mental y lo espiritual. Se vuelve cristalina la base para el mandamiento "Honra a tu padre y a tu madre.".

En un instante

El viernes pasé por un procedimiento medical, algo normal para mi edad, y algo que requirió que me fuera sedado. Recuerdo bien la experiencia y unos momentos en particular. En un momento acostaba de lado en la cama mientras me está contando la enfermera lo que hacía, dándome algo para relajarme. Estaba pensando que no sentía ningún efecto. El próximo instante, estaba acostado boca arriba, y me está diciendo mi esposa que ya ha terminado el procedimiento. ¿Cómo podría ser verdad? Les di que ningún tiempo pasó entre los eventos. ¿Cómo podría pasar 30 minutos, incluyendo un procedimiento, sin que conociera yo de ellos? Es como si el planeta pudiera continuar a rotarse sin mi indicación. Aun hoy, creo que fue un truco mágico, un engaño. El médico no hizo nada para mi. Los resultados son una invención. Bueno, por lo menos, eso fue mi experiencia. Sin duda, los técnicos médicos de hoy en día son maravillos.

To borrow

Mientras chateaba con una mujer esta noche, nos hemos encontrado con el tema de “lend” y “borrow”, dos verbos complementario en inglés. Es un tema que me interesó antes, debido al descubrimiento que le falta al español un equivalente directo a “to borrow”. Por supuesto hay frases como “sacar prestado” o “llevar prestado”, pero estas son diferentes de un sólo verbo. Le he dado a mi compañera algunos ejemplos del uso de las palabras, como “to lend a hand”, que quiere decir “ayudar”. (Ella ya conocía “to lend” en el sentido de “prestar dinero”, pero no sabía que se usa también con objetos como un libro, un móvil o una mano. Pero en lugar de “lend attention”, nosotros “pay attention”.) También hemos hablado de la línea de Shakespeare: “Neither a lender nor a borrower be.” (“No seas prestador ni prestatario.”?) Finalmente, me he acordado de una tradición con novias a sus bodas... deben llevar “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue”. Déjame darles un ejemplo más... Cuando una persona está dispuesta a hacer cualquier cosa para obtener algo, decimos que está dispuesta “to beg, borrow or steal”.
