 It was two or three weeks ago, I can't remember clearly. A friend of mine told me that this winter the weather in her country was being extremely rough. Everything was snowed and the wind blew with an evil force, blowing down trees and pots that she had in her garden. One of them was overed in buds waiting for the sun to appear, but instead of that gale force wind put an end to its life. That pot was like a member of the family and when it crashed into the floor its branches were broken and when it happened, a part of my friend's heart was broken too.  

She seemed affected and told me that she was looking forward to her next holidays, 'I can't stand this cold weather' she told me. We both coincide the weather is changing. In my city this winter is been extremely rough too and, in our opinion, it's a fact that the global warming effects are growing up, making the weather forecast almost unpredictable. 

I asked her where she was going to go and she told me three fantastic words, the Canary Islands and then happened what usually happens when someone mentions you about something or somebody, you start hearing of this on TV, in papers and so on, but last Sunday I was placidly watching TV when a documentary started and, do you guess what  the documentary was about?, yes you are right, the Canary Islands.

The documentary was about the volcanic origin of the islands, but there is one of them which is particularly dangerous because  it is very prone to these kind of phenomenons, La Palma island.

After showing the spectators breathtaking views, beaches and laurisilva forest, the narrator started talking about the hidden danger that it is inside the island. According to an American research, scientists believe that there is quite a lot water running inside the slept volcanoes. They are in the opinion that if these volcanoes were awaken, the water steam generated by the heat, would raise the temperature inside the mountains and, apart from the tremendous eruption, would provoke a chain of unpredictable magnitude explosions.

These chain of explosions would make the left side of the Island fall inside the sea, what would unleash a fifty meters tsunami after 6 or seven hours the explosions and landslide happened. The tsunami would hit the Us East Coast, Brazil and the Caribbean Islands.This terrible disaster might affect 100 million people.

                               

Well, I'm sure that Cumbre Vieja volcano is not going to be awaken. It's not time for it to set off the alarm clock. My friend has to enjoy her journey before it!. The Canary Islands are one of the best landscapes Spain has and I'd like to think that the predictions of this research are never going to happen, because the unthinkable is already happening in Spain and a six million  unemployed people tsunami is hitting us with unpredictable consequences in the near future.

Two years from Japanese disaster

On Friday, March 11, two years ago an 8.9 Richter scale earthquake hit the Japan’s eastern coast. This is one of the top five earthquakes ever recorded. The quake nearly killed 15000 people and there were 5000 people missing.

The magnitude of the quake unleashed a 7meter tsunami and was followed by more than fifty aftershocks for hours. According to the experts’ opinion, after an earthquake of this magnitude, the aftershocks take quite a while to die down.

Hours later the tsunami struck Hawai and warnings blanketed the Pacific, putting many areas on alert as far away as South America, Canada, Alaska and the entire US West Coast.

Apart from the people who died, there were, in my opinion, two main consequences:

1.- Nuclear Power plant explosion

The Fukushima plant was shut down during the quake, but after that, the backup generators needed to power cooling systems, but instead of that experienced critical failures. As a result of those failures the pressure build-up and exploded. The officials warned that small amounts of radioactive material were likely to leak from the plants. Finally, the scientist sorted out the problem, but the whole world asked itself about the consequences and if it was worth using nuclear power, especially in prone quake lands.

2.- Earth Axis shifted due to quake

Recent studies have showed us that the earthquake moved the main island of Japan about 2.4 meters and shifted the Earth rotation axis by about 25 centimeters. Isn’t it amazing?

Learning from Japan’s disaster

I have no doubt that everybody in the world should learn from Japan’s reaction to this disaster. For example, within a month, Senday airport, flooded by the tsunami, reopened. In some areas people went to work only two days after the earthquake.

How long do you think Spanish authorities would have taken to sort out  a disaster of this magnitude?

We have to recognize that Japan has one of the most effective emergency response services in the world.

Japan’s early warning system is believed to have saved a lot of businesses, hospitals and transportation networks because it service was able to shut down all the running processes thirty to sixty seconds prior to the earthquake.

What happened to Japan was such an enormous tragedy, in particular for a country that is so well prepared. Everyone in this country takes personal responsibility for their own preparation.

We have to understand that four tragedies confluence at the same time: the 9.0 earthquake, the tsunami, the nuclear explosion, and a snowstorm. These four disasters happened within 24 hours.

In those 24 hours we could see wrenching stories, which really struck a chord, but we have to learn a lot of Japanese people, how they were able to deal with those four tragedies at the same time and what incredible society it is in terms of how they came together and helped each other. They are simply extraordinary people.

It’s a reality that nuclear power is the most efficient source of energy that it’s ever been developed, because we can get a big amount of energy with a little amount of uranium but, on the other hand it’s the most dangerous energy too, so …..

Why do human beings have to take so many risks?

Could we live without using nuclear power?

Are human beings unable to produce a less dangerous but efficient energy?

I think that the answer to these questions is YES, but while we’re trying to find an answer, the politicians are busy, thinking about money and trying not to lose their best position in the picture, while the whole world is being polluted.   

The Christmas Book

Last Christmas there was a gift for me in the christmas tree. It was a thick book written in English. The Mammoth Hunters. Then, talking to my wife, she told me that it was an idea of my eldest son. Well, at first I thought it was a crazy thing because the book has about 700 pages. Later, I found out it was written for children, that is to say, using a huge number of synonyms and all possible verbs.
It is like an small learning book but in an exaggerated way. Perhaps, the good thing it is that when you have read a few pages and the plot begins to interest you, the story goes on and goes on, the book seems never ending. That is what I like least about the small books. They are so condensed that you always leave a little empty.
Well, short ago I have begun to read the book. I have read one chapter. I would have loved the story about twenty or thirty years ago. If I am enjoying with its reading is because I know that in a short while my son will be reading the same pages and I will be able to help him with the hard expressions and I know he will enjoy a lot. As he is a normal child, he chose this title for me because he liked it for him. (He is ten years).

El Mercado de la Cruz

Otro recuerdo de México...  Una tarde mi hija y yo caminabamos hacia el Mercado de la Cruz en Querétaro. Mientras nos acercabamos al área, vimos muchos vendedores con sus puestos en todas partes alrededor del edificio. Uno de ellos tenía pilas y pilas de jaulas con pájaros tropicales, canarios, periquitos, todos tipos. Pero me llamó la atención las aves en dos jaulas — ¡eran cardenales! ¿Cardenales en jaulas? ¿No saben que los cardenales son pájaros salvajes, que no fueron destinados a estar enjaulados? ¿Cómo podría alguien detener un animal tan hermoso, una criatura que veo por mi ventana cada día? ¡Qué cruel! Es una cosa llevar pájaros tropicales hasta las regiones del mundo donde no se ven, donde los puedan apreciar benévolos dueños. Pero es otra cosa capturar los queridos pájaros de los EEUU para ¡explotarlos y exponerlos en lugares extraños! ¿Qué piensas tú? ¿No estás de acuerdo?

Geografía

Mi herramienta más nueva para estudiar es un "diccionario visual" que pedí prestado desde la biblioteca. Lo había visto alli antes, pero siempre lo evité debido de que se centra en el vocabulario y en los sustantivos en particular. Uno no aprende un idioma por memorizar sustantivos. Creo que los verbos importan mucho más, particularmente en español. Sin embargo, llevé el libro a casa y estudio páginas cuando tengo unos pocos minutos libre. Acabo de leer una sección sobre geografía, así que trataré de escribir un párafo usando algunos de los términos...

La geografía de América del Norte

La característica más prominente del continente es la enorme corderilla que cubre su tercio oeste, derramándose desde Alaska por Canadá y los EEUU, y llenando casi el ancho entero de México en el sur. El Golfo de México es obvio también, acompañado por las bahías de Hudson y California. En relación con el agua en el interior, los Grandes Lagos son bien conocidos, y drenan por el Río de San Lorenzo en el este de Canadá. Entre estuarios, el que conozco mejor es el Río Hudson entre la cuidades de Nueva York y Albany, una distancia de casi 250 km. En un estuario la nivel del agua está afectado por las mareas del oceano. Me asombra de que el oceano puede influir el ambiente a tal distancia.

Eddie el Águila

Es muy curioso que cuando una persona está enferma tiene sueños muy extraños.  Anoche tenía sueños de un hombre que le llamamos Eddie the Eagle (Eddie El Aguila).   No he tenido noticias de él desde hace años.  Este hombre representó el Reino Unido en los juegos olímpicos de invierno en el año 1987 como un saltador esquí.  Como sabéis el deporte de esquí no es común en el Reino Unido, hay una zona pequeña en Escocia pero la mayoría de la gente prefiere ir a Francia o Austria para esquiar, es más cómodo.  Esquiar en Escocia es como esquiar en el Antártida.   Todo el mundo en Reino Unido le gusta un héroe!  Pobre Eddie El Aguila no tenía dinero ni financiación de ninguna empresa, su equipo era de calidad muy baja no como los otros competidores.  Su visión no era perfecta, tenía que llevar gafas pero tenía un problema con el vapor en las gafas debido al frio!.  Realmente quería ser esquiador alpino, pero no tenía la velocidad que necesitaba, así que eligió ser saltador esquí.  Por supuesto, no tenía ninguna posibilidad de ganar la competición pero en el Reino Unido este hombre se convirtió en un héroe.
Muchas personas de otros países creían que no se debería haber permitido saltar, pero los Británicos le apoyaron y le animaron mucho.  Años después, todavía es bien conocido, no por sus premios, creo que no ganó ninguno, pero por su esfuerzo y determinación de competir en un deporte que le amó.  Recuerdo bien, todo el mundo en Gran Bretaña estaba viendo la televisión cuando fue el turno de Eddie El Aguilo a tomar su salto.

La gripe

Estoy escribiendo esta redaccion desde la cama.  Después de la noche, hace cuatro días, que mi marido y yo fuimos al cine para ver Los Miserables, he estado enferma.  El jueves pasado por la noche, me despirté, de repente, con un dolor de cabeza tremendo!  Como si alguien me dio un golpeado en la cabeza con un martillo.  Por la mañana, descubrí que no podía levantarme de la cama, me sentía muy debil.  Bueno, así es la gripe!  No he tenido la gripe desde hace cuando era niña, y recuerdo bien pensando que iba a morir!!!!!!   Osea, cuatro días han pasado, y todavía estoy en cama, bueno, por lo menos tengo un poco de energía para escribir un poquito.  Tengo a mi lado mi ipad y he estado buscando la enfermedad en internet como se hace, para averiguar cuánto tiempo dura la gripe, y aparentemente dura siete días pero puede dejarte siendo muy debil durante dos semanas después!

La verdad es que no me sorprende,creo que será un tiempo largo antes de que me siento como un ser humano de nuevo.

Mi suegro

Mi suegro es un gran hombre. En los últimos años cuida a mi suegra enferma con mucha paciencia y fidelidad. Y es un montón de trabajo. Al mismo tiempo maneja todas las necesidades de la casa, como las compras, las finanzas, los quehaceres. Además, lo hace todo por sí mismo. Desafortunadamente mi esposa es la única hija suya que podría ayudarle, pero vivimos a una distancia de 7 horas en coche. Les visita tantas veces como pueda.

Hoy le he escrito un correo electrónico, contándole qué está pasando desde mi regreso de México. He mencionado que pienso en un cambio de puesto en mi trabajo, y algo sobre la oportunidad de que escribí el otro día. Él replicó con muchos consejos sabios, preguntas de que debo pensar, etc. Debío haber pasado por lo menos 30 minutes escribiendo su respuesta. ¿He mencionado que mi suegro es un gran hombre?

La novia

El título de este escrito podría ser el de una película o, por lo menos, el de un episodio de una telenovela. También podría ser "Conoce a los padres". Veremos cómo salga la historia. ¿De qué estoy hablando? Bueno, por primera vez, uno de nuestros hijos trae a casa a una novia. Él es universitario, viviendo en otro estado, y llevan casi un año como novios, pero no hemos conocido a ella, excepto por teléfono una vez durante las navidades. Esta semana es su pausa de la primavera, y van a pasar unos pocos días con nosotros. Pues... es una nueva experiencia para nosotros. ¿Cómo debemos comportarnos?

Supón que a ella no le gustemos...
Supón que a nosotros no nos guste...
¿Qué tal si lleva demasiado maquillaje?
¿Entenderá el humor raro de mi esposa? (Probablemente, por que parece que mi hijo lo ha heredado.)

Si puedes aconsejarme, no vaciles en hacerlo. Llegarán mañana, y el tiempo es corto.

El muralismo

Alex me mandó escribir más sobre mi viaje a México...

Una de mis clases trató del muralismo mexicano. Este movimiento artístico comenzó en los años después de la Revolución Mexicana, que terminó cerca de 1920. Había escuchado hablar del movimiento y había visto algunos de los más famosos murales, pero no sabía mucho del origen y la vida del movimiento.

En la primera clase, hablamos de las condiciones económicos y sociales que conducieron a la revolución. El Porfiriato (el periodo en lo que mandaba Porfirio Días como presidente) fue un tiempo de desarrollo en las mayores ciudades pero un desastre para los campesinos. Los terratenientes acumularon cada vez más tierra mientras trabajaban los campesinos en un sistema de casi-esclavitud. La injusticia fue uno de los impulsos de la revolución y llegó a ser un tema principal del muralismo.

Todo esto me vino en español y, después de una hora, me dolía la cabeza. Pero no quise instrucción en la gramática o en el vocabulario. Mi objetivo principal fue escuchar y conversar lo más posible, y este tema, como los otros, nos dio algo interesante de lo cual podíamos hablar.
