Complaint letter

Hi,
This is an example of a complaint letter. I'd be very pleased if you check it. What it has been written in it it's not true but I'm sure that it's something likely  to happen to people who is used to booking on the Internet where we're  only able to see breathtaking views and facilities.
I'd like to ask you a question, when arriving to your destination, haven't you ever asked yourself if you were in the same place you had booked?

Thank you in advance.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to complain about my stay in your hotel  last weekend.

This was the first time I went to your hotel. I chose it because I was told that it offered exclusive services and, according to your website, among of them was an impressive acclimatized outside swimming-pool which I thought it was going to be perfect for me to relax by swimming in warm water and breathing fresh air at the same time.

However, while I was checking in, I told the receptionist what was the pool timetable and, to my surprise, she told me that the acclimatized outside swimming-pool was not available because the water heating system did not work. I got angry because that was the main reason I was there and I did not have time to look for another accommodation.

I had to stay because I had no choice but I strongly believe that you should have notified your clients about this inconvenience on your website while doing the booking and it is for that I would like to receive an explanation and if possible a refund.

Yours faithfully

Vicent Gozálvez

  1. Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to complain about my stay in your hotel last weekend.

This was the first time I () I HAVE BEEN to your hotel. I chose it because I was told that it offered exclusive services and, according to your website, among () them was an impressive acclimatized outside swimming-pool which I thought () WOULD be perfect for me to relax AND SWIM in THE warm water and () BREATH THE fresh air at the same time.

However, () WHEN I was checking in, I () ASKED the receptionist what was the pool timetable and, to my surprise, she told me that the acclimatized outside swimming-pool was not available because the water heating system did not work. I got angry (OR I BECAME ANGRY) because that was the main reason I () HAD CHOSEN THIS HOTEL and I did not have time to look for () OTHER accommodation. ( O ANOTHER HOTEL)

I had to stay because I had no choice but I strongly believe that you should have notified your clients about this inconvenience on your website () WHEN RESERVATIONS OR BOOKINGS WERE BEING MADE) and it is for () THIS REASON I would like to receive an explanation and if possible a refund.

Well done Vicent! Another very good piece of writing.

  2. Thanks again Katie. Today it's your birthday. Congratulations.
Could you explain me the difference between other and another?

    Thanks again.

  3. Bueno Vicent, I had a feeling you would ask me about this. La verdad es que muchos hispanohablantes comenten el mismo error.

These words refer to something different, remaining or additional. ANOTHER is used with singular nouns and OTHER with singular or plural.
OTHER -Example Plural = There are OTHER jobs you could do. Where is the OTHER box of chococlates.

ANOTHER - Example = Have ANOTHER cup of tea.
I am going to choose ANOTHER hotel, this one only has two stars. There are lots of OTHER hotels to choose from.

OTHER expresses quantity and ANOTHER expresses quantity, extra or additional.

In your sentence (OTHER) accomodation refers to a different choice of accomodation. Es bastante difícil explicir!
    .
Here are some examples I found on the internet.

I would like ANOTHER glass of water because I drank mine already. I am requesting an additional glass of water.

Imagine you want to buy a blue towel so the assistant picks up a light blue towel but you don't want the light blue towel. You want the other dark blue towel. (There are choices and you don't want one, you want the OTHER one).

Imagine you are eating a piece of cake at a new restaurant. It isn't very good so you say, "The cake at the OTHER restaurant is better than here".

You want to buy fish and you are comparing prices at the market. The first kiosk is charging 4Euro a kilo but you want to see more. So you could say, "Let's go to ANOTHER kiosk to compare the prices".

At the second kiosk they are charging 6Euro a kilo. So then you could say, "The fish is cheaper at the OTHER kiosk".

  4. Lots of thanks, Katie. I think I've understood your explanation.
So, in the sentence 'I did not have time to look for other accommodation' , it's used other because I was in a Hotel and I mention accommodation which can be a hotel or another accommodation, something different, but if I refer to the same kind of accommodation, the hotel, I would have to use 'another'.
'I did not have time to look for another hotel.
    Am I right?

Yes, it's very difficult to explain.........

    Thank you again.

  5. Yes Vicent. Sometimes I know things are wrong, but it is hard to explain why, especially in this sentence "I did not have time to look for other accommodation" I did not have time to look for another hotel = perfect!

  6. Ok, Katie, be sure I'll try not to forget it!!!!

    Thanks, you're always very kind.

  7. Well... I hate to muddy the waters here, but to me (gringo, ugly American), "time to look for another accommodation" sounds perfectly fine. In this case "accommodation" and "hotel" are synonyms. But "other accommodation" is also OK if I think of "accommodation" as an uncountable noun. If a noun is uncountable, you can't use a/an/another with it.

...just two cents from another English native speaker (although clearly not the queen's English!).
