    (1) "Mythical" would imply that he was not a real person.
    (2) I consider "to leave to the imagination" an idiomatic expression. Here's another usage:
Pornographic magazines leave nothing to the imagination.

    1. "Mythical" is an interesting topic because in Spanish is the same meaning but adding the meaning: a person who has been created around it a whole of idealized beliefs and images who turns it in a model. So we say: Greta Garbo es uno de los mitos del cine.

  2. Yes, interesting. The English "myth/mythical" does not have this sense. We attach that sense only to "legend/legendary".

Here's something humorous for you. We have the expression "a legend in his own time" which means that a person has taken on the attributes of a legend even while he is still alive. Perhaps Messi is already "a legend in his own time". At some point someone altered the expression to apply it an egotistical person - "a legend in his own mind".

  3. However if we speak about "personaje mitológico"(instead of "mítico") is exactly the same that English, so to tell the truth, it would be the real translation. Mythical=mitológico.
Elvis Presley fue un personaje mítico.
El unicornio fue un animal mitológico.
As to "legendario". We say "legendario" when we are speaking about a person who was able to make a great story with his/her life, epic and impressive story(leyenda). It is pretty used in westerns :) They are usually heroes.
    El legendario Charlie Chaplin.
La leyenda de una ciudad sin nombre(Spanish title from "Paint Your Wagon"movie)
